The youngest member of Healthy City network in Baltic Sea Region – the Lithuanian city of Klaipeda does not stay behind the more experienced partners. Several health promotion projects in implementation, with more in planning, and Healthy Cities Conference organized in October 2012, Klaipeda shows that its membership in the network is well deserved and appreciated.
Klaipeda joined European Healthy Cities in October 2010. A Mayor and Community Health Council are formally responsible for the project, which is in practice implemented by Public Health Bureau. The project is supported by University of Klaipeda.
Various actions, targeted to children, pregnant women and general population are organized. One of the most popular are classes of Nordic walking. Same scientific investigation is carried out together with the University Departments of Health, Economy and Environment. Public Health Bureau cooperates also with the public transport office to develop new projects together, that aim at better environment and increased physical activity of the citizens.
Klaipeda celebrates its 700th anniversary this year. The perfect time to visit the city is on 18 October 2012, when the Healthy City Conference will take place. The conference is organized by Community Health Council and Public Health Bureau and all representatives of European Healthy Cities are invited to participate and to share their experience.
